Fear of Driving (Amaxophobia)

Fear of driving is now a widespread state of anxiety, which is to be classified in the category of phobias. In technical jargon, this is known as amaxophobia.

Various symptoms can occur that make driving a car almost impossible.

Typical features here are:

  • panic attacks

  • sweating

  • Increased heart rate

The primary thing here is that you have to admit to yourself whether you have such a phobia or suffering. With my special amaxophobia coaching it is possible to get this fear under control.

The causes of the phobia can be different. I basically distinguish between two forms:

  • Specific fear of driving
(Anxiety that is directly related to the car or the process of driving. Those affected often have the feeling of losing control of the situation. In particular, they believe that they are causing an accident through their own mistakes.)

  • Unspecific fear of driving
A distinction is made here according to:

    • Social Anxiety
Those affected are afraid of socially stressful situations in traffic, from horns or criticism from other drivers. They often suffer from strong feelings of guilt after small mistakes in driving.

    • Agoraphobia
This form of fear often occurs at construction sites or on freeways, since there is no possibility of escaping or stopping. You feel constrained and at the mercy of the situation.

    • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
In the case of PTSD, the focus is usually on the experience of an accident or near-accident, since many of those affected have not yet mentally processed this experience and are still suffering from it.
Affected people associate many situations with the previously experienced event.
